How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Let's start with the basics, because I'm always surprised how many people expect a heat pump to create heat. It doesn't. A heat pump moves heat from one place to another. Even on a cold day, there is heat in the outside air. The refrigerant absorbs that heat, the compressor raises the pressure, and the indoor coil releases it inside. That's it. No combustion. No fuel tank.

In cooling mode, the reversing valve sends the heat in the opposite direction. The same system moves heat from inside the building to outside.

That number depends on climate and building load. To be fair, efficiency is only half the story. For me, the bigger selling point is that a heat pump can replace both a furnace and an AC unit. One system, two jobs.

The terminal block is accessible. The flow sensor is not buried behind layers of plastic. You can actually test the components without taking the whole unit apart. That matters on a service call.

The efficiency message is real, but not for everyone. The U.S. Department of Energy says tankless water heaters can be 24-34% more energy efficient than storage tank models in households that use less than 41 gallons of hot water a day. In a high-use building, that efficiency advantage shrinks. So if you are spec'ing for a hotel, make the decision on reliability and footprint, not just on the energy label.

I've seen contractors save $150 on a cheaper unit and then spend $600 on callbacks. If you ask me, that's the wrong way to save money. A Stiebel Eltron electric tankless water heater is not the cheapest option. It's the one that gives you a fighting chance on the second visit.

Don't hold me to that without checking your local conditions, because shading and climate have a huge vote.

Can I Use an Electric Leaf Blower to Clean a Heat Pump?

When I got there, I pulled off the coil cover and found a mat of cottonwood seeds and grass clippings across the back of the coil. Do it safely. Turn off the disconnect first so the fan blade cannot spin. Use the leaf blower on low speed, then high, and blow from the inside out so debris comes out the way it entered. Don't use a pressure washer. It bends the fins and pushes water into electrical connections.

What Does the Oil Pressure Sensor on a Heat Pump Do?

This is the question nobody thinks about until the fault code appears. Most heat pump compressors rely on oil to keep the bearings alive. A small pump sends oil where it needs to go. The oil pressure sensor, or differential pressure switch, compares the oil pressure to the crankcase pressure. If the difference drops too low, it opens the safety circuit and stops the compressor before it ruins itself.

Think of it as the low-engine-oil light you never knew was there. It isn't there to annoy you. It's there to save the expensive part.

If that sensor trips, do not reset it and walk away. And do not bypass it. I've seen that end with a compressor that sounds like a coffee grinder. Check the oil charge, the crankcase heater, the refrigerant charge, and the actual pressure readings. In my experience, the root cause is oil, refrigerant, or heat related.

What's the Most Common Emergency Call You Get on Tankless Water Heaters?

At least two out of every five tankless emergency calls I run are blocked inlet strainers. An electric tankless water heater needs a minimum flow rate to switch on the heating elements. A strainer catches debris, the flow drops, and the unit shuts down. If a customer calls with a low-flow fault, this is the first thing to check. It's a twenty-minute fix, but it still feels like an emergency when the showers are out.

The second one is loose electrical terminations. I've opened up tankless units and found terminal screws that were barely snug. They work fine for months, then the connection heats up and fails at the worst possible time. If you install tankless water heaters, buy a torque screwdriver and use it. That one habit has saved me more than one Saturday night.
